Obligatory Post-AC Post

Wow. My tenth AC. My tenth AC. My tenth consecutive AC.

I really respect--and envy--those who are able to give hour-by-hour recollections of the good time they had at Anthrocon 2008. I am not such a person, however, but I do want to highlight a few things.

To all the friends old and new I was able to connect with this year: I was thrilled to see all of you, and whether it was for a few passing moments or for hours at a time, it wasn't nearly enough time.

To all the artists I was able to talk to and collect art from: I can't thank you enough for obliging this perpetual fanboy. Collecting art is a big part of why I go to AC, and you all rock! I am only sorry I wasn't able to commission sketches from everyone I wanted to.

To Kage and the staff and volunteers of Anthrocon: Again, a fantastic job this year--you all make it look so easy...and I know it isn't.

To the Dorsai Irregulars: I had the unique opportunity to talk with some of you folks this year, and my respect for what you do has gone up exponentially. When the average view of a security person is that of a brainless thug, all of you show it can be done effectively with grace and compassion. Thank you for not allowing the few whiners and buttholes from keeping you from coming back year after year!

And as always, my heartfelt thanks to [info]tchall for his hospitality, and for putting me up (and putting up with me) before and after the con.

Excellent AC, as always! Let's do it again next year. o(:o)

Seattle!

Whew! Just finished packing. Tomorrow I head out on a road trip to Seattle, to hang out with #bohemia folks for what will be called Seattlemania 3. Basic schedule:

6 days (July 4 - 9) - driving from Houston to Seattle
6 days (July 10 - 15) - fun in Seattle
6 days (July 16 - 21) - driving back home

See everyone from Wichita Falls tomorrow (assuming I can connect on my laptop from the Motel 6)!

Some news..

Alright , so first , I apparently suck at Dr Mario .. can't finish a bottle unlss I'm at a low level!

But last time I played was YEARS ago .. so I guess I have to get my skills back.

-----------

In more important news , I was "let go" of my job .. it was sudden and I still don't know why!!

All they kept saying was that I was not what they were looking for!

Now this doesn't make sense because :

1- I was there for a YEAR

2- I got up to the last level before becoming supervisor

3- I got an evaluation one week before Anthrocon and it was very good.

So what the fuck is going on , I'm asking you?!

I have my ideas ..

See , lately , this huge fat fucker at work (who kept chit-chatting with the customers and talking to everyone about conspiracy theories while WE were working) was causing more trouble than it was worth and I was starting to make complaints against his work because in a day I had to fix stuff he didn't do right.

What I didn't know up to recently is that him and the bosses are friends and stuff.

There would be no other explanation to the fact that he's doing terrible work like that and getting away with it!

Also , I was part of the small bunch of people who really found the new rules about clothing ridiculous
(it's a call center and they almost wanted us to wear suits or something) -_-;;

So I think I was simply becoming a nuisance and they found some sort of way to fire me .

Their excuse was that my customer service quality was not adequate!

Again , 1 year , level 3 , 90% on last evaluation?!

But I really don't care , I was going to leave anyway .. it's just that now I have a stain on y record and I HATE that!

And what pisses me off even MORE is that they wait for me to come back from AC before telling me that! FUCKERS!

More art practice

I saw this pic at Lou Romano's blog some days ago, and I thought I should try to emulate it. I think it's good practice because you're forced to think about how to achieve certain effects and to realize the intricacies of their design. For example, with Lou's art, it is the smooth, continuing curves to define volumes in a simple, but very clear way.

Here's my offshoot. I loved everything of his pic except the medal on the bat, so that's gone:

Tonight, Bob.

Right around bedtime will his plane land at San Antonio airport.  For crying out loud, his job made him reschedule his flight (which was supposed to be Tuesday) and he ate the cost.  For that, we will treat him to the best 4-day weekend of his Spanish life!

No place to post my stuff .. sniffles

I know I have an account on FAP but I really don't like the site interface , and at this point
it seems somewhat pointless to post there cause it's full of people I don't know

*sighs*

Oh well I guess I'll post some stuff on livejournal's server for a while.

How did you first find Star Control?

Hello, this is Shiver from those other couple Star Control fan hideouts. If you've visited those, you may be familiar to me and I almost definitely to you.

...very easy to spot...

...'cause everyone's always arguing with me for some reason...

:(

So anyway! I've lurked here once or twice and came back to ask how you guys (meaning girls) found Star Control in the first place. I understand the existence of this community is mostly Zarla's doing, and thanks for that by the way, but I'm puzzled as to how this many women latched onto the game. I know several lady gamers in real life, but none of them are familiar with anything retro like this.

I tend to be a negative person. This trait always worked well for me in the past. A sense of dissatisfaction incentivized me to improve whatever was in my control to improve. This philosophy yields some amazing measurable results but not a lot of happiness. And when one burns out, the crash can be hard. I need to find a source of positive energy* to balance out my innate negativity.

While in the dentist's lobby, a man in his 40's entered with his troupe of 5 kids. They were so happy and smiley it was unreal, my first thought was that they could only be evangelicals. Sure enough, within 60 seconds, one of the younger boys started reciting memorized Bible passages, denoted by book, chapter, and verse. Damn, give me some of that happy drug! But I know it won't work on me. :C

On a lighter note, back in college, I thought I was pretty decent Street Fighter 2 player, but it turns out I am shitty. Oh well, it took a while but I got the required 30 ranked wins to earn the 35pt Achievement.

* Hiking in the mountains works the best, hence my preference to move to the Sierras, or somewhere with good mountains nearby like Seattle.

Dear art journal

Dear journal, I've been super busy with life and stuff. I know I've neglected you a bit, but I'm finally on vacation, so I plan to compensate by posting occasional doodles based on art I see that inspires me.

Today, I got a cartoon bear that looks a lot like Tom, and a bad doodle of Calvin. Copied, not traced! Check out those arms.

New and recent cartoons: Barebones presentation

FurAffinity is a wonderful and useful site, so much so that I've just been uploading my pictures there and been lazy about updating my own website. Unfortunately, FurAffinity is about as malfunction-prone as a glass basketball, so right now all the cartoons I've done in the last few months are unavailable, unless I get cracking and update my website.

I can do so, but it'll take a while, as I'm still cranking out all my own HTML more or less by hand. But right now I can at least upload the images and link directly to them, so here they are in a barebones presentation:

Home from AC 2008!

Howdy-doo folks, I'm finally back from AC! The con was a total blast; super-busy, but tons of fun as well. I had a fantastic time meeting and greeting everyone, from old friends to new, and it was just overall a great con. Thank you to all of you who made the con wonderful for me, who spent time with me, who took time out of their days to stop by my table and say "hello", who gave me handshakes and hugs. AC 2008 was awesome, and I just wanted to send a big ol' "Thank You" out to all of you who made it so for me :) A few highlights...

-- bothering everyone in costume, and becoming the tallest fursuiter in the world on the shoulders of [info]nalltwd. We actually managed one taller, but [info]athauglas and I got yelled at by security so Voltron was no more :( For those wondering... [info]athauglas is about 70 feet tall. If anyone has any good photos of me in costume running around and being an idiot, please share :D

-- recieving wonderful random gifts and arts from all sorts of people (some whom have never even met me!) who came by to wish me a Happy Birthday :)

-- spending time in the zoo, making the rounds from table to table, saying "hello" to various folks

-- getting to meet some incredible artists that I admire greatly, but was always too shy to say anything to. I finally had the courage to walk up to Stan Sakai at his table this year to squeak out a tiny "Hello, thank you for coming here and sharing your time with us, I really admire your work." only to have him give me a warm, friendly smile and thank you, then hand me a big t-shirt :)

-- sharing hugs and luvs and artings with all you awesome people. I'm not going to do individual shout-outs because I know I will forget noteworthy people, and as such get yelled at, so I'm just gonna say YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL AND I LOVE YOU ALL <3

-- keeping happily super-busy in the dealer's room crankin' out the artz for you all :D Thank you so much to everyone who came by for arts, and who took home some of my art show pieces. I'm so grateful that my new portfolio was so well-accepted, and shortly later on I will be making another post with details on how to acquire a copy of it for those who wanted one after they ran out (or didn't make the con at all) :D

-- there were tons of other awesome noteworthy things to mention, but my lunchhour is over and I need to get back to work XD I'm sure I'm forgetting stuff... those of you who have fond memories, feel free to comment and share as well!

And lastly, but most definitely not leastly, was the absolute epic effort made and masterminded by a certain [info]athauglas to create what was probably the greatest prank I've ever seen pulled at AC. In short, because Athy is a beautiful @$$hole, he (and his devoted team) turned my boyfriend Gan's little sporty racecar into a pinata. Yes, a pinata. It was amazing beyond words. You NEED to check out his LJ post for all the juicy photos and details. I laughed, I cried, I wished we could have driven home like that XD If anyone else has photos of the amazing Viva Toyota, please email them (or comment here!) XD spunkywulf at gmail dot com

In fact... if any of you have any cool photos of me doing idiotic things in or out of suit at the con, please send them my way :D If I have time I might make a big photo compilation post :) Thank you again to all of you who took the time out to say Hi to me, and I look forward to seeing you all again next year (or at another event)!

note: As I type this entry, it has quite literally suddenly gone from sunny to a sudden freaking hail storm of epic proportions. I mean, gale-force winds, chunks of ice hail the size of marbles, and sheets of rain, all out of nowhere. What the hell Boston... it's July 2nd!!!!

Quick con report.

Quick con report...

Mostly same ol', same ol'. Bizzee during the day, bizzee during the night.

Most of it was a blur, so I'll just touch on highlights. Some things of note: )
So yeah...stressful, tiring, and not long enough to get to do what I want. But you'll see me next year, no doubt, and hopefully I can get more accomplished next time.

Good seein' y'all, and hope some of the rest of you try to come next time ;-)

Introduction

You know, I don't think I ever introduced myself, though I'd been lurking as a member for months now. If I did introduce myself, forgive me; LJSeek.com seems to be LJSuck at the moment, so I can't check.

Hi! I'm Arrow (I only chose this LJ name because that was long gone), and I'm pretty much a lurker in general within the entire SC fandom. Came here via a recommendation in a [info]little_details post comment, IIRC. Star Control 2 isn't a fandom I usually look for fic based on individual characterization for, despite the fact that genres like that are all I ever tend to read in my other fandoms. Possibly just cause I didn't know where to look! But fic like that seems to have a nicely large presence here, and things don't ever seem to get boring, so I do believe I'll enjoy it here.

Also, as an irrelevant note, I'm a guy. I normally wouldn't even bother pointing something like this out, except I saw the note about this community on the TV Tropes page for Estrogen Brigade, and so I thought you all might be amused to know that your community is just that much less 100% female now.
